Supercross started as a 3 moto format. Within a couple of years it went to a Main Event format. I applaud AMA for switching it up to allowing a few 3 moto races a during the season. I have talked to a few riders about it and none of them or the teams like it.

Both have advantages and disadvantages. It's definitely exciting for the fans to see 3 starts and those crazy first few laps. Kinda anticlimactic when a rider comes across the finish line for 3rd and is the winner.

What are your thoughts...

I really enjoy the triple crown races, but having only a few each year works, I don’t think a whole series would be good.

3 Moto's for 450s, semi/lcq/main for 250s. This would create the differentiation in classes desired.

I don’t mind a couple here or there. It changes it up. With everything at the touch of our hands (iPhone) people are searching for instant gratification or excitement. All the races can’t be barn burners. That’s just the way it goes.
I am not a 4t hater nor 2t hater. I’ve owed both of them. Everyone is tenths off of each other, and it’s turned supercross into nascar with jumps. I don’t know what the answer is, but I really miss 2 stroke racing in supercross.

Should be a both option. I personally like having a couple throughout the year.

I have to agree... I like the "BOTH" option. Normally I don't like a bunch of format changes in racing, but the Triple Crown events held just a few times during the year is pretty good.

I also dig the longer mains. Having a guy come from 12th and making a run at a podium or better is extremely entertaining.

Don't see that in a TC event, starts are much more critical... Had CW picked to do much better as I expected him to start near the front a bit more than he has this year. His strengths last year? Not so much this year.

Triple crowns are boring to me. Some of the best races are in the LCQ’s.

This makes no sense at all.

Three races = three times the starts, excitement, finishes

One main, gives you one start, some excitement for half of the race, then usually a boring settle in, follow the leader and ride it out to the finish.

LCQ's are similar to the shorten three race format.

20 minutes of racing that counts towards the championship once a week is not enough.

A few triple crowns a year is good I think. I did like the Semi's they had in '17 and '18.

I don't care; I just wish they'd let the 30 second girls shake their hips again.

You can't tell me the third race isn't always a snoozer. Nothing good happens after the 2nd main.

i have been posting about this for a while........my take is that you can only do so much with track design, in the end it as to be safe and ridable for every on, still lots called the meat grinder anyway !!!!!!!.......my view is that the 450s these days are way over what an sx track can handle, too strong, too fast, any rider on any bike of the mais event of an ama sx race can do whatever jump or line, even most 250s can do it.......the choice of the track design is all about either a meatgrinder or a follow the leader fest.....the choice of the riders are risk it all every race, send it for the win and spent most of the carrear hurt......... or play the game, work on the starts, learn to follow the leader and get 2º 3º, its podium !!!! for sponsor its huge, top ten is a good day.......make your money and move on in life
i belive that the fim and ama 450 motocrosser is a bike that as out grown the stadiums of ama sx, too much for such a small venue, remember that its the same bike that wins dakar, baja1000, etc, its just tuned diferent.......
for me ama should put 250s in sx and 450s in motocross, 250 mod for the pros and 250 stock for the youth......it whould open a hole lot os possibilities in track design, the return of dual lines, of dual jump sequences and all the fun stuff from 2ts era,
its just my idea.......surprises me to not hear or read nothing on this subject, remenber the 500s going away from pro racing because it was too much and you could be faster on a 250 on a proper motocross track ????

I can't agree more. It will take 10 years to really decide if such a big change is needed over a complete series. But it would somewhat break the history, and adds a lot more risks. Less riders would make the season healthy. Some years it sucks a bit when half if not more of the title contenders are out or that less than 10 factory riders are on the track.

Lots of good comments in the thread too, I liked the semi's too, I would not be against to see a few rounds with semi's. Having a triple crown in 450 and a normal main in 250 is not crazy at all too for some events. Bringing new things each week may help to feed some down tv time as well as keeping the viewers on the edge during a whole season, although as it is i am already super stoked between the traditional mains, triple crowns, east, west and shout outs, but after 17 rounds i am also really stoked to see the MX season ! As there were lots of proposals, why not a joker lane for 3 rounds ? Wink

How about a coupl'a SX races that run 2 "15 minute plus 1 lap" motos? That would be 32+ minutes of racing.

Bye the way, Saturday night's race was 3 X 12 min + 1 lap that provided over 40 minutes of racing (450 "Mains")

I wouldn't mind having 5 of the races be triple crown. Without the semi format the heats are inconsequential unless a guy goes down late.

Inconsequential is a pretty perfect term.... 2 hours of meaningless BS before the mains start.

I could easily see you may have that opinion of me off the quoted post.

I just prefer to watch points paying races. The Nationals and GPs each give us hours of meaningful races compared to supercross.

I would kinda like to see 2 20min moto's. Both moto's pay points just like the moto's outdoors. It would still be 20min less track time than outdoors. I only watch the heats and semi's if I am at work. If at home I do other things till main event time.

If all three races payed points toward the championship and still named an overall winner for sake of tv and bonuses it would be better.

3 triple crowns is plenty. Akillerwombat said it best last year:

“Triple Crown is fucking without foreplay. Fun from time to time but not nearly as rewarding over the long haul.

When you realize that 2.5hrs of foreplay includes dinner, drinks, and hitting up her favorite bar for a nightcap before getting home you'll understand the value of foreplay.”
