Was thinking the same about the spacers, what if you drop one in the dirt on the line? No way in hell you're gonna find it

These guys all run captive spacers that don’t fall out.

Would have taken me 15 minutes, I would get the chain tension wrong and the chain would have snapped.

He got a flat tire on the siting lap?! He is the first one in 14,971 siting laps to get a flat?...and you want to "get that guy a beer"?...Yeah, after you give him the flat tire to figure out how and when it went flat so that doesn't happen again!

Throwing the tools with zero fucks hahaha... I'd be making sure there was no dirt or grease on them, and putting them neatly next to each other.BlushLaughing

That was stressful and traumatic for me to watch.

I wonder if they practice for these scenarios.
I think I can change a rear wheel pretty fast but not on the starting line with the clock ticking...

If they spent a little time and effort, even on a stock setup, you can make changing a wheel a breeze, Captive spacers, with decent lead ins for the spindle, and good chamfers on the outer edges, makes it an easy job. Add a centre finder to the spindle and it gets even easier.

we have to swap out a 5in wide slick into the back of those, and i can do that in the holding area in half the time it takes two of them to do the front (where we have to pull the caliper off) . We mod the brake carrier so you can fit it after the spindle is most of the way thought the wheel too. Makes it all very easy.

Endurance road race bikes are set up for fat changes, they have do a front and a rear in the time it takes you to decide which end of a spanner to use.

At a bike show here a few years ago , they had a WSB spec GSXR 750, wheel change competition, where you took the rear wheel out, put it in a marked circle and refitted it. I did it in 24 seconds at my first go. And didnt win.

Smith's guy earned his money for sure , but it amazes me how some of these guys flap, the classic 'cut the brake line' that they take ages to do when all you have to do it crack the banjo bolt.

Good job from the mechanic, but that is what you expect from a factory mechanic. Some of the wheel swaps that we have seen through the years from factory mechanics has been baffeling to watch.

Watched interview when this happen to Anderson.

They don’t practice. But how many times a day do you reckon they remove a wheel. Probably to many. When you do something everyday, I’m sure he could do it blindfolded quicker then most of us ?

I was thinking dang hope they pumped that rear brake before he heads into the first corner...

Was funny also how the mechanic was ready to set the holeshot device and Smith is looking around for him to help him with it!

Dunlop mounts all the tires. The mechanic just gets a cart full of them. They're all mounted on the wheels already then they just throw them on. So the mechanic didnt create the problem but he sure did fix it. And he deserves a beer.

Smith stomping the brake to set the pads was a nice touch!

There was a video on Instagram a few months ago of Smith having a tire changing contest with his mechanic. He was pretty quick. Guess it came in handy

Did you hear Smith in the press conf? When asked about it and what happened....Smith replied with a: "I took my sighting lap and decided to change the gearing....." . It was pretty funny.

Regarding the occasional flat....I'd bet us spectators would be surprised by all the trash, nails, rocks that is in the "good dirt".
