Fibula is a major weight bearing bone, no way he meant fibula. Sounds like they meant tibia but you'd think someone would have to proofread these things before they're released.

Break a Fibula you can gimp/limp along. Break a Tibia you can't walk. You become an anatomy expert when you're laid up for a few months.

Did not know he suffered a pilon fracture. Much, much worse than a fibula. Good luck JG33.

If you need a bone graft they can remove the fibula and use it. It’s pretty easy to break the fib if your leg gets caught up in the handlebars in a crash

I sit here 11 weeks out from a pilon fracture and hope to be able to start weight baring next week after my 12 week post op visit. 4 plates and about 18 screws later in my tibia as well as a broken fibula I am wishing JG33 a speedy recovery. Unfortunately, I think the protocol is the same for open reduction surgery to your ankle.
