I ran across this thread on the "Indian Dunes" page in Facebook. It gets good about a third of the way down when Michael Snider asks if anyone knows what the real reason was for why the place closed down. Gary Lamb was one of the owners, or connected and what he has to say is enough to piss off anybody. It makes me want to find Rich Cain. If you have high blood pressure, you'd better stop reading, cuz your brain will explode!

In 1986 they filmed part of the movie "The Eye of the Tiger" at dunes. It was about a gang of outlaw dirt-bikers. Dunes had been closed for a while, but all the tracks were still there. During our lunch break ( I was an extra) I walked around and checked all the tracks. The International Track had trees growing right in the middle of the course. Everything was so overgrown. I was shocked to see they leveled everything years later.

I ride my bicycle down 126 to fillmore and back all the time and all I think about is dunes! My best memory was the asphalt uphill road ( behind the first turn international track)from the pits out. I saw Paul Lane scraping his rear fender on a wheelie. I asked him how do you do that? He said "get the front wheel up and ride the brake" One week later and 35 years today I've rode wheelies! Thanks Paul!

Basically, the "Riders" who got hurt sued the owners of Dunes. I believe they were sued 15 times in 3 years where Dunes lost. The owners couldn't afford it. They were supposed to sell it to the State of Cali and it was going to be turned into a state riding area, but Riverside raceway closed and the owners of Dunes backed out of the deal with the state figuring they could sell it to the Riverside folks. The Dunes folks got greedy and the Riverside folks said "No", so they went back to the State, but since the Dunes folks screwed over the State, they State said "No" too. This was the Owners of the Dunes property, not Walt or Gary.

I'm going to say this one more time..The Dunes didn't close for any one reason.Newhall land and farm decided to get out of the liability business, they sold Magic Mountain when people started falling out of roller coasters, they sold the boat rentals at Castaic lake when people fell out of the boats and drowned..and they closed Indian Dunes when a play rider got awarded punitive damages in a lawsuit..When the Dunes first opened we had Insurance co's. lined up to sell us liability insurance, in 1985 the year we closed We couldn't even get a quote let alone a policy..They were still lined up to sell us race insurance (Racers don"t sue) but we could not find general insurance for the everyday operation..Due to Play riders running into each other and sewing us ..We even had play riders injuring them self in the desert somewhere and having their buddies drive them to the Dunes to say they were injured there knowing out insurance co. would settle with them..These people would even have us call a ambulance for them..One Monday morning we only had two riders in this 600 acre park and they ran into each other, they both filed a claim...THE WORD WAS OUT crash at the dunes and get a payday..

The only ones we have to blame are those inexperienced idiots that went out to play, usually after a few beers to get the courage to even get on a bike! I remember going out to practice one day and having some punk on the practice track run into me - his excuse was he was going so fast that he didn't know which brake to use without crashing - duh! So instead of using the brakes he plowed into the side of me. First thing he said was "If you are hurt you know you can sue this place" If I had been able to get up, I probably would have kicked his ass all the way to the International Track! Those are the people that actually Closed Indian Dunes! We all fought very hard to keep it open, but without Insurance it couldn't be done. Although Indian Dunes is closed, we all have so many wonderful memories! I grew up there and pretty much raised my daughter there as well, when they closed the gate for the last time it was like losing a family member!!!

From what I heard, the "Straw that broke the camels back" was a first-timer on a ATC or Quad who was riding down the pit road. She made a left turn in front of a bike that was pit racing and got T-boned. Now if this had been on the street, the lady making the left turn would have been primarily at fault for an illegal left turn, and the pit racer would have been associated due to his speed, but Dunes got the blame for not having "Baby Sitters" out there making sure people knew how to ride, and not working speed enforcement. This was on a week day when the park was almost empty!

I'm telling you it was heaven for a kid like me. I spent literally 5 hrs a day there for my entire childhood.
Going by your 'handle', I figured you were a Glamis-goon. Not so. You have a great history.
I lived by Saddleback, which was kinda far for a 16yr old, but was at the Dunes a time or two.
Yeah it got pretty bad with the lawsuits towards the end. My pops was doing depositions for lawsuits pretty regularly. Sometimes more then a couple a week. What he said wasn't an exaggeration either. Riders would literally get hurt somewhere and drive to the Dunes and call an ambulance and say it was there and file a lawsuit vs Indian Dunes. It was never racers though. It was always the "Saturday squid" with no gear on trying to do wheelies down the road. Or the drunk moron after drinking a 12 packs of coors going backwards on international.
Glad you got to experience what allot of people consider the last of the great mx parks. I get that confusion about my name.. Of course it was Daniel Dunes when I was at Indian Dunes. lol I was literally considered unbeatable there on peewee's,60's and 80's. Great battles there with Mouse McCoy, Kyle Lewis, and the rest of Dunes kids. When I left the Dunes I was'nt nearly as fast. So I stayed there and adopted the name.
Thanks for the link
Saddleback and Indian Dunes gone because of litigious happy buttheads
Where I grew up I lived almost dead center in between these two Motocross meccas. Took me about 50 minutes to drive to the Dunes and about 45 to Saddleback
Thumbnail - Florida's Supreme Court has said minor release forms are invalid, meaning kids may be able to be kept from riding or racing in Florida. This is the actions of the trial lawyers, and they are powerful. If they win in Florida, they will have set precedence and will be able to take this to every state across the US. THIS COULD ESSENTIALLY BAN MINORS FROM PARTICIPATING IN MOTOCROSS!!
LET'S GO KIDS, PASS THIS ALONG TO EVERYONE AND EVERY FORUM YOU KNOW!!
EMAIL ALL OF THEM....FLORIDA RESIDENT OR NOT!!
THIS WILL ALSO EFFECT ALL SPORTS OR ACTIVITIES REQUIRING A MINOR RELEASE....CHEERLEADING, SCUBA DIVING, KARTING, SKY DIVING, GYMNASTICS, HIGH DIVING, BASEBALL, FOOTBALL, SOCCER, ANY SPORT THAT NEEDS A PARENTAL MINOR RELEASE FORM!!
THIS IS AMERICA!! YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO CHOOSE WHAT SPORTS OR ACTIVITIES YOUR CHILDREN WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN!!
THIS WILL SPREAD ACROSS THE COUNTRY IF THEY WIN HERE....SO ACT NOW!!!
The minor release bill, HB 285 by Representative Horner, is up in the House Criminal & Civil Justice Policy Council at 1:00pm on Monday. I need all you folks to pop an email to the members of the council. and if you cant for some reason at least send one to the first three on the list (they're possible swing votes).
The message is simple:
Please support HB 285 by Representative Horner, without any amendments!!!!
I would also encourage you to include anything else about family, kids, parenting, and business, that you feel comfortable mentioning. If you don't feel comfortable doing so, the simple message above will be adequate.

CHILD WAIVER BILL IN HOUSE COUNCIL: The Criminal and Civil Justice Policy Council on Monday may take up HB 285 dealing with the ability of parents to waive their child's rights to sue for injuries or death in certain activities. It's a closely-watched bill for big business, including Disney, backers of tort reform, and trial lawyers. The bill, by Rep. Mike Horner, R-Kissimmee, seeks to nullify a 2008 Supreme Court opinion that held that pre-injury releases signed by parents to let children participate in commercial activities are unenforceable. Big business says it will make it hard for businesses that sell inherently risky activities, like Scuba shops, or rock climbing wall businesses to stay open. Trial lawyers counter that since the ruling, that hasn't happened. The proposal died on the House floor last session. (Monday, 1 p.m., 404 House Office Building, The Capitol.)
