So I recently sold my dirt bike. And my friend wants to go ride some intermediate woods trails in a couple days and I really want to go but all I have now is a little ssr 125cc pit bike which I bought for my son.
When I rode with my son I took the pit bike up a trail for a short ways to try it out, it feels like a pretty capable bike.
I've even upgraded the tires since then.

So my question is: is trail riding a pit bike a thing?
I don't really care if I look dumb, I'm just curious if any of you have had a serious day of trail riding on one of these little things.
I'm 6'1", so it might get a little uncomfortable but I haven't rode in months and need to get out there!
TIA

oh the irony of dontstealmybike stealing his own son's bike grin

Sounds like a great way to trash your sons bike, honestly. I'm sure you'll be careful with it, but nobody ever breaks a lever, bends bars, smashes a pipe or rashes up their plastics on purpose. a SSR 125 was simply not made for a 6'1" adult to ride intermediate trails on. Pit bikes are made for just that - darting around the pits and backyard hooligan riding.

Find yourself something cheap for trail riding with your buddy, like a 90s XR200, Suzuki DR or Kawi KDX

I would do it. I used to have a couple of those same bikes. I would take 1 of my daughters and ride along. You could thrash it, or just be easy on it, and hopefully not trash it. Im 6', after a bit it gets boring though, kind of...better than nothing!

I'm planning on getting a used yz125 this winter. But right now, being bikeless, I figured I'd take the little pitter out just for fun.
I mostly just wanna be out in the woods again.. and my buddy i ride with rides pretty slow so I shouldn't have a problem keeping up.

"better than nothing" was my thought exactly. I rode hard all spring and early summer but i haven't rode in 1 or 2 months, and I just miss being out in the woods.
And this sr125 was like $750 brand new, so I'm not too worried about beating it up too much.
Will probably just keep this bike around as a little f--k around bike anyway.

get an xr100. bigger wheels make for a much more enjoyable ride.

I raced a stock CRF100 in the 450 class for a hare scramble and finished 6th but DQd. It was half national track/woods. Hour long race. Just hold her pinned the whole time. It was super fun

One of my friends spent a whole day riding in Pittsburgh woods and hills on a mostly stock CRF70 (suspension work only, plus a muffler end cap and UNI filter). It went everywhere.

Curious, why'd you get dq'd?
And that crf100 looks bigger than my sr125 but not by too much.

I'd do it, but I agree with the comments about having a cheap japanese bike just because they can take a beating. There was a good sized kid riding a pit bike at Foresthill (local trail spot) a couple weeks ago, it looked fine. I'm about your size and I took my small wheel ttr125 for a few hour ride, but it was mostly fire roads and stuff. Other than the terrible seat it was fun.

We all got crf100 or klx125s around here. I put a Baja designs stator and trail tech x2 headlight and we did motos all afternoon and into the night last night. After a few captain and cokes you gotta back'er down in the sticks...they start to blur together

In reality you can put around and the bike will go most places.
But you will get bored and over ride the bike by going faster
than you should at your size. Then when the bike is damaged
what are you going to do? Best to leave it alone and get your own bike.

I just picked up a ttr-125 big wheel. I am wondering if I should take it out for one of my Thursday night bush rides.

My friend used to have an SSR and we would go trail riding all the time. I remember went up the road a mile or so to ride im a field hidden behind some forest and I remeber all at once on the way home the engine bolts snapped, chain snapped, header came undone from the muffler and the rear brakes locked up. All at once. Couldn't stop laughing at how unlucky he was.

If you haven't already, I'd blue loctite every bolt on there. After that and changing the oil (if u haven't already) you should be fine.
Probably feel like you dropped the soap in prison a few times for the next few days after. But you shouldn't have any issues.

Once I had plans for a trail ride and was looking forward to the KDX but it turned out we were short a bike so I let my buddy ride the green bike and I rode the ttr 125. Had a blast.

I have a KLX140 that I've ridden on trails and as long as it's slow/tight stuff it can be more fun than on my big bike.

I trail ride my crf50 mod all the time. Other than getting laughed at by the occasional turkey hunter I have a lot of fun.
