Toss em ? Donate them to poor kids ? (Mexico maybe ?) There's got to be something better besides tossing them in the trash. I'm out of shelf space for something to just look at. Obviously they're old helmets and I don't know how "safe" or "unsafe" they are. But there for sure better than no helmet. My thought is take them to Baja and toss em to some kids. Any other ideas ?
ps. I don't need another lamp Laughing Any gear for poor kids charity's out there ? Just curious if they can be of any use to anyone.

Get all the racers to sign it, raffle it, and donate the proceeds to charity.

I have a wall of shame. Every helmet I have owned has been retired due to crashing and wrecking it. Last helmet i had lasted 3 months before destroying it

Have kept every helmet I have bought since I started racing.

Last two helmets I got are custom painted so will never be getting rid of them.

Clean it, give it to a thrift store and get on with your life.

All of the helmets I have kept or thrown away have been "well used" Dizzy I wouldn't wear them again.

If the helmet was thrown away because of a big crash, cut the straps. You don't want someone using a compromised helmet. I tossed mine at the dump and within a couple minutes of tossing it, some dude came over and picked it up. Cut straps save lives. It's a good idea to cut the straps on a memorabilia keeper as well.

If they've got special paint? They go on the shelf.
If there got some life left in'em? They get a fresh liner and a new owner.
If they've been bashed? They go in the trash.

Most of my old helmets are at my brothers place hanging up on his wall along with his. It's basically the wall of concussions.

If the guy is dumb enough to get his helmets from the dump, he’s probably the type of guy who doesn’t bother strapping his helmet on.

I do the same with all my old helmets, they hang from the wall of my garage. My own memorial to myself.

I just sold a 8 yr old SHOEI for around $150 on eBay. Never hit the ground so it was very clean. I guess it will still work well....do they lose structural strength over the years?

Every 4 years they are supposed to be replaced because of the material breaking down.

There's a guy in another thread that will be happy to clean your old helmets. Just watch out for that "special" cleaning technique he uses...

Custom paint I’d probably hang on to. Bad crash, trash it. Still something I’d wear? Give it to one of my buddies who needs one, or bring it to the track and give it to someone who’ll appreciate it. Same with take off tires and really any spare gear/parts. Making someone’s day is always cool

Depends on if I crashed in it or not. After any crash where I hit my head, I'll do a thorough check of the inner styrofoam (?) to see if I notice any signs of compression or cracks. If I really crack my head, break a visor or get a concussion, I'll toss it straight away. Generally, if I take a tumble and can get up right after without any issues, I'm not worried about it but will still check it if the visor got tweaked down or something. If I get knocked out, the helmet is instantly retired.

All the helmets I've grown out of or just gotten tired of that never really kissed the ground, I'll just put on craigslist stating it's a few years old and list that it hasn't been in any nasty wrecks. I like to put I'm selling it because I just want a new design but also would feel still comfortable wearing it longer for general purposes/trail riding. I sell shit all the time as soon as I'm done with it. No point in keeping it around to collect dust and eventually wind up in the bin unless it has a cool story or sentimental value.

Maybe this is just me being naive but if you're looking for a used helmet to use at the race track, your brain is already a little wonky. Even though I'm relying on other people to take my word that my helmet is "safe" I still wouldn't buy a used helmet for the race track. Basically good for general low speed riding, trail riding, a helmet your cousin can put on at the cabin to ride around in the woods. But if you have a big one in it, please just throw it away.

Usually dump them. The only one I have kept is the one I broke in half doing a scorpion desert racing back in '86. AHHH memories...

That is terrible. So you buy a $500 helmet and I’m supposed to toss it aside n 4 years? I don’t want to take a chance on a head injury but my god that’s not a very long use period

I know. It sucks because I haven't worn my helmet very much and it's at 4 years now. And of course I just sold a brand new Bell Moto 9....
