Someone told me today that KTM engine parts are made in China. I have a hard time believing that. As their factory is in Austria. If they're paying people to build the bikes there, and the hallmark of KTM's name is fit, finish and quality, I doubt they outsource engine parts to China.

Anyone have any insight? If I'm proven wrong I'll be eating a lot of crow.

Mostly in austria for precision parts. Probably somewhere in eastern europe for others. Turkey or Croatia or something. Just a guess

Original production parts are in Austria but outsource any replacement parts, usually poor tolerances weve have to modify impellers and such to fit

I think someone is confusing the 125/250/390 4T bikes (made in India) with the Austrian bikes.

My 300xc has made in Austria cast into most of the engine parts. The clutch basket is made in Italy. KTM is not scared to outsource product to manufactures that have a proven track record of building quality products. That means not all of the bike is manufactured in one place. Taiwan made metal products are actually very high quality these days. That country is quickly becoming a power house in precision cast and machined metal manufacturing.

I had an early KTM 125EXC in the shop last week for a new clutch basket. I noticed on the basket it had 'FCC' stamped in to it, so made in Japan.

I'm pretty sure this was the original OEM clutch basket.
So what outsourced parts are on KTM's?

47% of KTM is Indian

I believe I also remember reading about a KTM factory in Malaysia producing engines.

saw below on wiki

At present KTM AG is 51% owned by CROSS KraftFahrZeug Holding GmbH, a subsidiary of CROSS Industries AG[8] and 47% owned by Bajaj Auto. CROSS Industries is founded by KTM's current CEO Stefan Pierer.[9]

Only the commuter bikes that are mostly sold over seas are made in other parts of the world. The race bikes are made in Austria, some parts are not manufactured by ktm. Like wheels, bars ,ignitions, etc etc. I think that's how they are doing it.

They are made in Decoster's machine shop. I read it on Vital.

The real question is did polaris' buying into ktm in 2005 or the push from the Austrian government help them reach where they are now internationally.

Ryan Dungey reeling off titles isn't what did it on a global spectrum.

Has there been any other resurgence in the industry by a mfg like this? Not including Husky...

Let's add Pankl, Excel, Regina, Galfer, Polisport...lot's of parts made by WP...and I mean more than just suspension stuff.

For those of us throwing the India v. AG data around: That's "ownership" as in stock distribution, etc.

The OEM I work for obtains parts from every industrialized nation on Earth, including Japan, where they are located.

If KTM is anything like that (probably very much so,) They get wheels from Japan, ignitions from Korea, Rods from Croatia, Serbia or Herzgobia, steel for their frames from the US or Russia, electronics from Germany, etc.

Most of you would be surprised at how little a KTM is actually KTM-made. (Or Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Gas-Gas, etc.)

It's also money and marketing influence. There was a very focused movement to move the brand forward starting in 05 and through several investments and partial acquisitions throughout the years the efforts been put in from the top down.

Or maybe the 2 stroke kooks really do have that much influence? Worldwide, Orange is the color....

Exactly this. I believe most of the companies are engineering motors, frames, designing bodywork and then everything is spec'd and outsourced (wheels, brakes, electronics, suspension, plastics etc) I'm sure KTM fits in there somewhere, but not sure about Chinese parts..yet. I KNOW of at least one Japanese company using some random parts from China now.

A 5-6 years ago maybe someone brought a part up to the parts counter I was working at and he told me to guess what it came out of. It was a KTM part number which was obvious, and had the KTM logo on it. Pulled it out of his Mini Cooper! Can't remember exactly what it was but wanted to say it had something to do with an oil line. Kind of a trip. Part number didn't pull up on ktm dealer site.
