Getting back in to riding and racing. Purchased my boy a PW50.

Debating with myself between these bikes:

2006+ YZ250 (for SSS)
Steel frame YZ250
Kx250 (have no idea what years to stay away from).

Just back from LL’s. I’m 28 so I have two years before I can run 30+ Sportsman

Help!

How about a steel frame YZ with updated suspension. You can even put updated plastics on it. Great thing is that it's fairly cheap to do whatever you want to it.

yeah a '97 Sick get the 05-07 or stay away from it.

That simple. RM if you happy to change every season the gearbox.

YZ if you just want low end and a heavy feeling bike.

KX , how are those bikes, the last ones?? Never had a change to ride one.

If you are going used. Yam. and can get parts no problem. Any the CR, RM and KX are getting harder and harder to get oem parts for on rebuilds. Not to mention expensive. New bike, KTM and Husky are pretty nice.

I am in a similar boat but quite a bit older 47 FYI.

My skill level may not match yours. FYI my old skill set included things like my signature cross rutting technique, getting thrown from the bike without too many injuries(slow does that for a fellar), mid class C level at best. My current skill set isn't even worth mentioning. I pretty much ride for fun so take this for what it's worth.

Having owned Suzuki, Kawasaki and mostly Yamaha bikes I have a bit of experience. I can honestly say I am such a spode of a rider I don't care too much about the "little" details such as turning, power etc... as all the bikes were/are more capable than me as a rider. I can say from a maintenance standpoint Yamaha always treated me best. My mid 90's Suzuki's loved to eat clutches, the Kawasaki's need more care in the cylinder department, plating etc...

My results,of course, will be different than most as I don't even know what 8K RPM sounds like, other than going by me...

Having a current production bike is a big plus IMO. Whether it be KTM/Husq, Yamaha, Beta, Sherco etc I think being able to get parts easily is a big deal. This hobby is expensive enough, add on the difficulty to get parts and well you get the pic I am painting.

Good luck in your search. Enjoy whatever you get and get out there with your kid.

The kx frames tend to have problems in the foot peg areas and under the cradle seams thin.
I've had motor mounts crack. Only owned a 94&00 but it happened to both bikes. 00 cylinder needed replate at about 30 hours if I recall correctly

RM250 turns like a a scared rabbit.
Takes off like one too. My 05 goes from casually rolling round a corner to full blown panic in a blink.

I've been a die hard 2 stroke rider all my life but now I'm wondering if I'm making things difficult for myself after having the shit beaten out of me by the RM again on Saturday. Feel like I've been shot from a cannon!

Damn if I don't also love that bike though.

Loved my ‘03 KX 250. ‘05 and up would be your best bet as far as a KX as the engine and fork, I believe, were last updated in ‘05.

get a yz, plenty of available parts/info. i have an 03 kx and it's been an ok bike, but it's a bastard. lots of one off parts that only fit that year. the 05-07 have a rocketship motor but weird chassis is what most people say(never ridden one)

RC4 had his heaps soft off the bottom end so he could get on the gas earlier but yet more aggressive through corners.
Looks like it worked for him considering its the last wining 250 2 stroke and His Mechanics Gooses' all time favourite bike... They cant be too bad.

YZ 250. Time tested parts! Great suspension! Reliable, cheap to maintain and the bling, aftermarket parts and hop-ups are virtually endless.

Agreed.
My RM has just had some "work" done to it and it feels faster than my 450 and it turns amazing. The shortest way around a track is usually the fastest. If nothing else, good luck passing me from the outside.

I still do not get people saying Suzuki's are unreliable. I am on the stock clutch on my 05 RMZ 450 with 0 slippage and only rebuilt it once since new and it has a million hours on it.

My RM250 has the Easton bars and stabilizer which tames it down. (may want to sell them, I like a nervous bike).
My RM 125 still surprises a lot of 450's when I take it to RIO.

For me a RM 125 or RM250. The YZ is a good bike if you are good turning with the back wheel. Suzuki's steer w/ the front wheel, very different.

Or you could nut up and drop $8K on something modern that you will not be able to fully utilize like a KTM or Husky.

This. My '06 has been rock solid since the day I bought it 13 years ago, save for one freak top end failure. (It scratched up the cylinder pretty fiercely but the bottom end is still tight.) It still performs at 95% the level of a 2019 and I can always find parts. I don't think I'll ever sell the thing.

sold my 06 rm250 for a new kx250f.
reason was snapped my wrist and did nerve damage. the vibrations caused a struggle.

How ever, doing shoot outs in aus. the turning of them older Rm's is still surprising. hands down the most underrated bikes ever made.

Get yourself a good used '18+ Husky/KTM, they're great bikes. The counter-balancer motor is really good. You can tune it to be a fire breathing monster or like me a vet cruiser...had a Pro Circuit tuned '05 RM250 that quite frankly I was not capable of riding...blast for 3 laps then had to pry my hands off bars it hit so damn hard. Bud has '16 YZ250 with head ported and its great bike as well, awesome motor but he even states my '18 TC250 is lighter, turns better and has better suspension and brakes are out this world at least for us older guys.

We all ride/race vintage up to late 80's bikes as well and truth of the matter is all the recent bikes are really good bikes. Find a good deal on one that you like, get the suspension set up for you and have fun....95% of us are not going to be much, if any, faster on a '20 TC250 than a well set up '95 CR250

You really can't go wrong with the YZ. It might not be the best in every area, but I firmly believe it is the best all around 2 stroke.

The last few KX's got a bad reputation, but man our 05 is a rocket ship!!! I love that bike.
