Getting back in to riding and racing. Purchased my boy a PW50.
Debating with myself between these bikes:
2006+ YZ250 (for SSS)
Steel frame YZ250
Kx250 (have no idea what years to stay away from).
Just back from LL’s. I’m 28 so I have two years before I can run 30+ Sportsman
Help!

That simple. RM if you happy to change every season the gearbox.
YZ if you just want low end and a heavy feeling bike.
KX , how are those bikes, the last ones?? Never had a change to ride one.
My skill level may not match yours. FYI my old skill set included things like my signature cross rutting technique, getting thrown from the bike without too many injuries(slow does that for a fellar), mid class C level at best. My current skill set isn't even worth mentioning. I pretty much ride for fun so take this for what it's worth.
Having owned Suzuki, Kawasaki and mostly Yamaha bikes I have a bit of experience. I can honestly say I am such a spode of a rider I don't care too much about the "little" details such as turning, power etc... as all the bikes were/are more capable than me as a rider. I can say from a maintenance standpoint Yamaha always treated me best. My mid 90's Suzuki's loved to eat clutches, the Kawasaki's need more care in the cylinder department, plating etc...
My results,of course, will be different than most as I don't even know what 8K RPM sounds like, other than going by me...
Having a current production bike is a big plus IMO. Whether it be KTM/Husq, Yamaha, Beta, Sherco etc I think being able to get parts easily is a big deal. This hobby is expensive enough, add on the difficulty to get parts and well you get the pic I am painting.
Good luck in your search. Enjoy whatever you get and get out there with your kid.
I've been a die hard 2 stroke rider all my life but now I'm wondering if I'm making things difficult for myself after having the shit beaten out of me by the RM again on Saturday. Feel like I've been shot from a cannon!
Damn if I don't also love that bike though.
Pit Row
Looks like it worked for him considering its the last wining 250 2 stroke and His Mechanics Gooses' all time favourite bike... They cant be too bad.
My RM has just had some "work" done to it and it feels faster than my 450 and it turns amazing. The shortest way around a track is usually the fastest. If nothing else, good luck passing me from the outside.
I still do not get people saying Suzuki's are unreliable. I am on the stock clutch on my 05 RMZ 450 with 0 slippage and only rebuilt it once since new and it has a million hours on it.
My RM250 has the Easton bars and stabilizer which tames it down. (may want to sell them, I like a nervous bike).
My RM 125 still surprises a lot of 450's when I take it to RIO.
For me a RM 125 or RM250. The YZ is a good bike if you are good turning with the back wheel. Suzuki's steer w/ the front wheel, very different.
Or you could nut up and drop $8K on something modern that you will not be able to fully utilize like a KTM or Husky.
reason was snapped my wrist and did nerve damage. the vibrations caused a struggle.
How ever, doing shoot outs in aus. the turning of them older Rm's is still surprising. hands down the most underrated bikes ever made.
It. The thing is a freakin blast, watch the tomac video of him shredding one!
We all ride/race vintage up to late 80's bikes as well and truth of the matter is all the recent bikes are really good bikes. Find a good deal on one that you like, get the suspension set up for you and have fun....95% of us are not going to be much, if any, faster on a '20 TC250 than a well set up '95 CR250
The last few KX's got a bad reputation, but man our 05 is a rocket ship!!! I love that bike.
