What makes Aldon such a good trainer? He doesn’t ride so how does he know what it takes?

Given the few last seasons, i'd say that Nick Wey and David Vuillemin are the two best coachs in the biz right now, with Aldon and his huge track records of course. Both have NYK and DV made their riders mature in a lot of compartiments, and both Dylan and AC are a lot stronger on all aspects that they used to be. Only difference here is that Dylan did ok in the whoops, DV didn't have to get his shoes dirty ;-)))

How can the guy in the white shirt not be an exceptional coach?

The OP makes a valid point though. Someone can explain things to the Nth degree on what to do. At the end of the day, it's the rider that makes 100% of the on track decisions and sacrifice. Either you have the natural ability, DRIVE and sack to do these things or you don't. Coaching only gives you a slight insight on what to possibly expect.

Good coaches dont have to be good athletes. An eye for technique and detail and the ability to speak to the athlete in a way that drives and motivates them is what makes a good coach.

Typically top athletes arent good coaches but middle of the road athletes make great coaches.

Aldon baker isnt a motorcross rider at all and hes the GOAT of MX coaches.

Ricky’s mom. Millsaps mom. Nick wey. All great coaches.

Exactly. People would talk about Barry Bonds as a hitting coach. He just could step in and didn't understand why someone couldn't 'just do' what he could, at the plate. But he really didn't know how to coach someone as far as what all went into his approach. It was just pure talent, so he never lasted as an actual coach. So someone like Nick, who obviously is still really talented, but understands the intricacies of the craft. I have pics of Nick from High Point a while back, just eyeing up the start lanes and gate selections, for what seemed like forever (I just happened to be standing on the fence at that time in the morning.) He always struck me as a guy who just understands the little things.

Bill Belichick never got to Tom Brady's level or results and Steve Kerr never got to Steph Curry's, yet both are coaching some of the best the sport has ever seen.

How many races have you seen Mrs Carmichael win ? About as many as Mrs Millsaps . They seem to do ok with coaching .
Mrs. C is the GOAT of coaches. Davi's mom has quite a few wins on her resume as well.

It seems like most dudes on Vital know what riders need to do to be champions, so Nick Wey is clearly qualified.

The philosophy is similar to business.

1. Those that can "do", do.
2. Those that can't "do", teach doing.
3. Those that can't teach "doing", consult on doing.

Those who can, do
Those who can't, teach
Those who can't teach, teach gym.
