After reading the Jap vs euro bikes thread a little bit I was wondering (I always have actually). Why do we always have to pay $500-$1000 ON TOP of our brand new bikes just because they don't know how to make an exhaust. Do you mean to tell me that FMF, PRO Circuit, Akawhatever has more money for R&D to make a "better" exhaust than the company actually making the bike? Not just exhaust (triple clamps, rotors, bars, suspension, air cleaners, etc.)but why is it that all the parts we replace on our bikes to make them "better" don't just come with it. I don't really want the BS answer of money because buying in bulk and putting on the on the bikes would certainly lower the price of what costs us a fortune.
The Shop
Generally pipes make a very small difference. Except in a few cases like the Husky “Ice cream cone restrictor” pipes might move the power about.
Triple clamps, links and suspension settings are a personal preference based on rider and conditions.
The rider makes a much bigger contribution, percentage wise, than the machine in MX. Especially compared to most other Motorsports.
I think a top rider could finish maybe top ten? (SX or MX) on an otherwise bone stock MX bike with the suspension setup to suit (springs/damping mods)
Aftermarket is more for preference.
Or just cut your stocker 1.75 to 2” shorter and re rivet. Have been doing this for years. Mostly for looks but it does improve the power just a little.
And I'd be willing to bet that Yamaha requires their OEM system to meet a much more stringent durability standard than the aftermarket companies do.
Your 'hop-up' parts are actually hop-down parts.
Rarely they're as good as stock, all things considered, weight, power, longevity..
Pit Row
It's a vestige from the old days where you had to convert a bike for MX use. It's also a huge industry- we all know those new triple clamps won't make any difference in Vet B, but we buy the stuff anyhow, because it's so cool.
