I was just wondering if anybody knew how and why it came about that mx has a 40 rider start gate?

Apparently having a 100 rider gates had too many riders on track.

Not sure really GPs tried to do 30 but didn't work out. If they had more it would be more privateers most of the field would be privateers or non factory riders. Seems like a good mix 40 probs about Top 15 are factory or semi-factory rest are dudes just enjoying the mx dream.

Back when they did rubber band starts, having 20 guys on either side of the doghouse seemed to be the limit before distance from the connection point started to become really unfair.

This makes a lot of sense. Thank you.

NASCAR increased how many they had on the track years ago. SX and MX need to add 5 more riders on the gate, even if they are starting on the second row.

Had a 40 rider gate at 59th and Douglas and you had to get to the gate early if you wanted a spot on the front row. Some times 50 or more riders on a 40 rider gate, good times

Why would you like to see 5 more riders?

Maybe it has something to do with rhe length of the gate sections.

Metal comes in 20' lengths which works well for allowing six 39 inch gates per section.

Deduct one, and sometimes two gates from 42 for the dog house = 40 riders

If anything I'd like to see less riders on the track, and a 125 class for half the rounds for up-and-coming talents like Aiden Tijero and retired pro's like Wil Hahn, then a support 250F class at the other half for up-and-coming privateers trying to earn their way into the pro ranks. I'd like to see like 30 riders in the show, maybe top 20 from qualifying, then top 10 from the consi. There would be less lappers, and I think the racing would condense the talent into 30 solid guys instead of 20 or so solid guys and 10-15 back markers who are out there just to be out there. Bash me if you want, but just spitballing ideas.

You mention a smaller field, but nothing about the length of the races...

I liked the Daytona SX better when they ran a 40 rider gate.
