I really want to try one of these, I watch a couple guys locally that have Alta’s and they look great.

but does this mean in the future the tracks will all have to have charging stations?

I can assure you they are well past the drawing stage of production...

Shot term would be to have 3 or 4 batteries with you at the track.

Been trying to get Fox Raceway to install a 240v 30a NEMA L14-30 outlet for a while now! Being on an Indian reservation, they pay much cheaper rates for utilities i've heard. Would be awesome to plug into that instead of lugging my 200lb generator to the track every time.

Nope, just means the noise of the bikes is now transferred to noise of generators in the pits.

I’ve told this story before and it’s kinda amusing. When Alta was going they supported an Endurocross Pro rider. At the first round of the 2018 season they had a couple vans and a bunch of guys for support. They also had an older loud ass generator that they stuck on the back side of their pits and left it running. Unfortunately that put the thing right next to our pits. After a little time I wheeled it into their pits and told them “it’s time for you guys to listen to this thing, because I’m tired of hearing it” they didn’t say a word and I walked away. A couple minutes later it was off😂

You're not wrong. I usually leave my generator in the back of my pickup and face the pickup away from everyone or away from where people are pitting/hanging out. Since sound is directional, the walls of the pickup bed and the rest of the truck do a pretty good job of blocking most of the noise. That said, my generator produces less than 80db at full load, much less than the exhausts of a 4-stroke. Its loud if you are standing within 5 feet of it, but you can have a normal conversation with someone 10-15 feet away from it.

If tracks offered 240V 30A hookups for a small fee, it would eliminate that noise issue entirely. Heck, i'd be willing to hook up one of those Killawatt meters to monitor how much energy i was consuming throughout the day and pay for my energy usage.

It's funny to hear people say they watch eF1 and its boring, then say that e-MX would be boring. It might be boring to watch, but never boring to ride.

There is a HUGE difference. None one of us are every going to drive an eF1 car. But we can all ride an e-MX bike. Yes, I worked for Alta and was drinking the Koolaid. But, as a motocross rider for the last 40+ years I have ridden every kind of bike and raced at the highest level. Been beaten by the best riders in the world.

I will tell you this, that riding an Alta was the most fun I had ever had on a dirt bike. Of the hundreds of demos I did, not one time did a rider get off the bike and not have a huge smile on their face. Isn't that why we ride?

Pro riders seemed to love it the most. They would jump on one and feel amazing right away. Less skilled riders also like it. One of the benefits is always being in the right gear. Never over revved or bogging.

Alta was not created to save the environment. It was made because the founders wanted an easier way to ride a dirt bike fast. The biggest draw back was range and that was improving and should continue to improve with the next OE that enters that space.

I'm not one of those guys that likes working on bikes. That was a huge benefit for me too. No air filters to clean, ever!!! No top ends, no valves to adjust, no clutch replacements, no oil changes, the list goes on.

My biggest regret is not keeping one of my five demos.

I'm looking forward to one of the current companies finishing what Alta started.

some random positives

1. Tracks simply run 30 amp wiring (like any campground does) and they sell the power to riders. Now it turns into a revenue opportunity for the track owners, and a 100% no noise / no generator environment.

2. being the curious type, I send a once a year inquiry into the local police asking about complaints related to dirt bikes, 1% are due to idiots wheeling down the road, the other 99% are noise complaints. squeaky wheels get the attention and a loud bike is an attention getter.

3. if Yamaha puts this into production, I'd put a bet that it would almost immediately become their best seller YZ version and probably win over customers from every other brand. Yamaha is in the business of making money, money=motivation to commercialize an electric YZ.

I call BS. If it's not a combustion engine why the fuck would they keep the bulky upfront layout?

I swear I heard one of the car companies (Ford IIRC)that is making new electric vehicles is adding the option (via a switch) that can pump in engine noise to keep that "roar of the engine" experience for the electric vehicles. Of course that is inside the car and not exterior. That sounds strange, but I really do believe that having no noise does make racing a lot more boring. Begs the question, do they add an option to make some noise?

I love the idea of the electric MX bike, especially the performance and ease of riding. But the no noise for racing is going to be really weird.

Weird without the noise? Absolutely.

However, I watched LLs through the RacerX site and barely could hear anythng besides the commentators. And I thoroughly enjoyed it.

If Alta was still open they would have sold every single bike they could make.

I will say it again, I would love to never do air filters and oil ever again.

I also think about the new rider who knows nothing about working on bikes. This is much less intimidating. All the maintenance (chain, sprockets, tires, grips) is low risk, in that, even if you mess up, your bike isn't going to lock up on the face of a jump. It's basically like working on a mountain bike.

I don't care at all what type of motor if is. If the bike handles great, is the same weight, and make great power, I'd prefer an electric engine, just to get rid of the constant maintenance. I never ride more than 35 minute motos, so the range isn't a huge deal for me. As long as I can get in 2 hours of Moto total at the track, I am good.

Which perfectly exemplifies the problem, because their doors are closed now. We will eventually get there and I'm excited for the future of MX bikes.

Another thing, particularly with the Alta but it will apply to all electric bikes. On the topic of beginners, the great thing about electric drivetrain is that you can tune it to have any power characteristic. My lady, who never rode a dirt bike before, was able to hop on my Alta in map 1 (150F like power) and instantly had the confidence to cruise around the parking lot, and eventually go on the kids track. The super smooth power and no clutch+shifting gives instant confidence to new riders.

Also, electric drivetrain performs the exact same every time you get on it, no matter the elevation you're at or the weather.

An electric MX bike will be my next bike. About a year or so ago I was parked next to a guy at Milestone who let me ride his Alta. I loved it. Took about a lap to get used to it (mostly the lack of noise) and then it was just fantastic. I can't wait to say goodbye 450 and hello eMX.

Me too. Keep the 450 and the 250 2 stroke for sentimental value but electric will be sweet! Rode a buddy’s Sur Ron last week and it was pretty cool. Not stout enough for an MX track but certainly fast enough. Can’t wait to see what a big 4 Japanese company can produce to ride on the track. Wish we could get just a few more teasers from them.

So which brands do we now for sure now are really digging into electric? Honda had their prototype and showed it off. Didn't KTM also invest a lot of money into electric recently?

This brings up a good thought.. Our typical manufacturers are specialists when it comes to dirtbikes but not really when it comes to electric motors and battteries. Why wouldnt they just sub the entire electric motor/battery part out to someone who specializes in that?

I don't think Honda or Yamaha Motor Company wants to sub out motor development...
