160k miles to much for a truck?

Edited Date/Time 12/26/2017 7:24am
Found a super nice Ford F-150, clean inside, accident free for a great price..then I scroll down to find out it has 160k highway miles..you guys think thats to much? I've heard you can get Fords to go 300k+ but that was just from a google search. Thanks

That all depends on who owned it, how hard they drove it and how well they maintained it. Any car/truck will go 200k + if its well maintained.

Says it has 2 owners but its most highway miles to work. I guess I should ask how they maintained it

Gotta get it up on racks and go through it with a fine tooth comb with a good mechanic. Smell the oil. Etc.

Many a high mileage vehicles out there. My brothers moto van has almost 200,000 and running strong but is well maintained. My express van has 120,000 no problems. Apples to oranges. My dad had an 08 f150 that just started falling apart at 125,000 miles. He maintained it well. Might of got another 100,000 out of it after all the maintenance he did. (But then totaled it on a bridge one icy morning—bad luck)

Just drug my 2003 Lexus es300 to the field. Will take her in when scrap goes higher. She died with 313,000 miles on her. Brakes tires and oil changes every 5000 before 150k mileage, and then changed every 3000 after 150k miles. probably should of used synthetic but used regular oil. Guy I work with has same car and it’s going on 460,000.

Take it for a test drive, that'll usually give you an idea of what condition it's in. Also check the trans oil, make sure it doesn't smell burnt. 160K really isn't much, my mom's escape is around 300k right now. Still going strong.
People lie, what they say really doesnt matter.

Don't overwhelm us with so many details or anything.

Depends, 160k could still be pretty fresh or completely hammered. This is why used car lots are the devil, you don't know what you're getting.

Really depends, some are shit beat by 90k. I traded in my 04 Ram with almost 200k on it and it still looked and ran great, original engine/trans. I take care of my stuff though. It is definitely a bit of a gamble.

I drove my ‘97 F150 235,000 miles before I sold it..only replaced wear items, but never anything major.

My commuter car is a Saab 9-5 and I have 278,000 on it- I almost wish the damn thing would die. I laugh every time it starts right up after sitting outside in -15F all night!

Point is, if well cared for 160k is nothing..could easily have another 100k in it. Plus, if you’re capable of repairing things then it’s a no brainer..

I bought a 97 F150 new and put 200,000 miles on it without any major issues. It was a 4.2 V6 with a manual transmission. I sold it to a friend and he got a year or two out of it before it blew a head gasket. so maybe 250K

That was a peppy little engine but it got horrible fuel mileage for a 6 cylinder 1/2 ton

that's all I have to say about that

Sold my 200K mile ‘99 Expedition 7 years ago. No issues the whole time I had it, passed smog, and still drove great when I handed over the keys.

Recently sold my 2002 Toyota Tundra with 260K Miles. I am convinced the truck could have easily gone to 400K miles. However, I thought it was time for a change so I sold it. Like everyone else said, what matters is whether proper maintenance was given to the vehicle. I changed the motor oil every 3K miles, tranny oil every year, brakes every six months, tire rotations every 5K miles, clean air filters, and timing belt and water pump and timing belt every 100K miles. Lets not forget the weekly hand wash and wax. With that said, the new owner loves it and I got top dollar for it.

My ‘97 F150 had the 4.6 V8- for all 235k miles that thing consistently got 18 mpg. Every newer truck I’ve bought since has gotten worse and worse fuel economy..wtf! Laughing

In all fairness most those miles were at higher altitudes over 6000 and I drive it a lot faster back then (85 everywhere) than I do now. it would get about 12 mpg where my Cummins would go 18-20 mpg.

160k is about average miles for the year. Most people put 12-15k per year on their vehicle. What I guess I’m saying is it’s not really high mileage, but I doubt it was “highway miles” either. Obvious sign for highway miles is where the mileage is way above average for the year, like a 2014 with 150k or something. If it’s a 5.4L, I would check to see if the spark plugs have been changed. Those engines had an issue with them breaking/blowing out. I don’t think the 4.6L and the V6 had those issues.

85 Toyota 4x4 straight axle still going on 490,000.
2000 F 250 going on 400K
2001 Dodge Cummins around 300K. The top 2 only had conventional oil changes every 3-4K.

The dodge always had 15W40 rotella or delo until 5/40 rotella and delo became readlity available.

All the newer vehicles don't have enough miles to care.
All have ran the HD Filtermags of some sort.. At worst case, I'd always run a super strong magnet on the bottom of the filters if not enough room.

A magnet alone is a helluva filter.

Thanks for the info guys. Just need to go check everything out myself.
2005 f150? Does it have the 5.4 Triton engine in it? if it does, run like hell. Those engines had problems with the cam chain tensioner oil seals failing, which would lead to losing oil pressure at the top end. This would cause the variable cam timing phasers to slap around, stretching the cam chain, and destroying the chain guides. To fix the problem, parts are $500-$1200 and a crap ton of labor. These engines also had the two piece spark plugs. When you change the sparkplugs, the extension sleeve would pull out of the sparkplug body. Then you'd have to buy a tool that Lisle makes to remove the sleeve from the cyinder head. (I had to do all the timing hardware on mine, bought the sparkplug sleeve removal tool because 4 of my plugs broke when I tried to remove them). I did the plugs at 115k, the timing hardware at 130k or so, and the oil pump quit and seized the engine at 213k. (forgot to mention the oil pump is garbage in that engine as well)

Keep us informed TOP. The 4.6's will blow plugs too. I snagged a 2012 f150 with a 2.5l twin turbo
two winters ago with 92k on the clock. I chipped it with a Stage 3 and smile every time I drive it.

Ricko, I just did the front wheel bearings and CV joints plus shocks. What else is a hot wear item for these?

The 99 didn't have that issue. It was mainly a 2004-2005 issue

Carfax can help. Nonaccident 1 owners are fairly safe bet. 3-6 owners always throws up a red flag to me.

Maintenance on carfax report is a hit or miss. All maintenance records might not carry through.

Maintenance records don't mean crap for the 2004-2005 5.4 powered f150. It's pot luck whether the timing hardware fails. Unfortunately, it's pretty common to get hit with the pot before they dump the bad luck on you. This particular problem has it's own thread on f150forums.com. something like 3000 replies to it, and that's mostly just the people who work on their own stuff.

Yeah, carfax is pretty much BS. I've pulled it on multiple vehicles I own, all of which I have owned since new (so I know the entire history) including my 99 van. It is so random whether or not accidents, repairs, maintenance, recall work, etc makes it to the report.

Example, a guy t-boned my van and the entire huge right side panel was replaced by his insurance. Not on the carfax. Another time, some chick dinged it with her door. Her insurance did a small repair. That is on there. Which would you rather know about? It's like that guy that just shot up the church in TX and come to find out he had a conviction in the AF and should not have been able to buy the weapon. Any database is only as good as the data input (or not) by the humans who have access to it.
