Toured both while down south. Words and pictures cannot really do these justice, you really have to board these ships, to appreciate them. A couple of pics.

This last pic, is the door to the central command turret, runs the height of the ship, operations in battle are conducted here. 17.3 inches of armour grade steel, all the way around. Can’t even begin to imagine the chaos in battle, with every 16”, 5” and AA gun firing.

Sweet post. Not your everyday floater. Those bad boys could inflict a whole bunch of damage in a hurry. Hearing protection required but I'm not sure how much good it would do.

Good for you Scoot. We toured the Iowa just before moving back to the state. Incredible ship.

Did you ask how long it would take to put the Iowa back into service?

I bet there's a contingency plan in someone's office.

They really are floating cities. My brother is a plank owner of the USS Roosevelt, and at the time of its commissioning it was a helluva boat.

Way cool pics of those war machines Andy, that pic of the sun setting behind the guns is beautiful. I love watching the show Modern Marvels about those ships, the one where they took a new aircraft carrier on sea trials was incredible, taking it WFO and carving hard right and watching the deck slant like it was gonna tip over, gnarly! Amazing machines. Thanks for sharing.

Saw the Iowa a couple of years ago. My Dad was in the Navy in WWII so it was really cool to see what these ships were like. Good pics.

The Kitty Hawk Veteran's Association was trying to get the Hawk made into a museum in Long Beach, but I think the Navy got antsy and sold it for scrap sometime next year. Really bums me out too, because I'd love to see a boat I served on turned into a museum.
