Curious if anyone here has found a good listing of various states weigh stations requirements? All I'm finding are vague statements on travel forums. I'm only towing a cargo trailer with a suburban but I would be just over 10000 Gvwr.

Would they even mess with you, unless you got pulled over for something else?

It's all speculation, you should call your DOT and see what they require if you are worried about it. I drive past weigh stations all the time with my RV rollin 22,000 combined, not commercial. Results may vary

unless it's a commercial vehicle you do not stop at weigh stations.

Non commercial, non CDL, you're under the weight minimum, drive it like you stole it. Not one scalemaster will even look at you, even in Georgia. I've been doing this 35 years, so a bit of background here. Wink

I drove OTR for 2 years for a family friends company to take a break from my regular job, and it's amazing what they let drive by a chicken coop if it isn't a commercial vehicle. Laughing

Then again, I had a brand new 2011 Cascadia and it was always spotless, so I only got a level 3 one time in Nebraska. Otherwise I always got a green light. Wink

Depends on the state...I forget where, but I have seen signs which specifically state motorhomes and buses weigh also. That being said, not common and that's the only time I'd weigh is if I saw such a sign

Your suburban doesn't have a GCWR of 26k, so regardless of trailer weight you don't need a CDL. If the GCWR of the Suburban is > 26,000 and the trailer you're towing weighs more than 10,000 pounds, you'd need a Class A CDL, provided whatever you're doing can be considered interstate commerce. Hauling a camper or something doesn't fit interstate commerce though.

Some states allow departure from these rules for people who drive RV's, but it varies state by state. Some require a different form of license, others don't require anything.

With a little cargo trailer and a Suburban I would not pull into any weigh stations at all.

Short sort version of a long story. Got pulled over with my 28' ww toyhauler going home from the desert. The gvwr sticker on the side of the trailer said 10,200lbs. Got a ticket and was told I need to get a class A license. Did a bunch of studying, went to take the test and was turned away before the test even started because the side mirror on my truck had a small crack. Got pissed and just paid the $400' ticket. Then wiped the sticker with goo off. It "erased" the printed weight rating off the sticker, it made it look like it was faded away, perfect. If your trailer has a sticker that says the gvwr is over 10,000lbs. Wipe it clean, peel it off, do whatever you need to do but don't get pulled over with it.

This is from AAA concerning GA weigh stations
The following vehicles must stop: (1) agricultural vehicles; (2) passenger or specialty vehicles, either single or in combination (towing a trailer) with GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or more; and (3) commercial trucks with GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or more.

Virginia was 7500 lbs

I'm renting so it will vary, light toy haulers if I can find them or something like a 6x12 cargo,
