Alright guys. I finally pulled the plug and bought a 1981 YZ465. Going to pull everything down and looking to see what all she will need. Just hope this artificial hip will start her up. And she does have a decompression in the cyl head. What do y’all think?

Looks like an excellent starting point. I may have a few misc. parts laying around for a 465 if you need something.

Thanks. I’ll be making me a list soon. It has a 490 bottom end in it.

Looks like a great candidate. Check your frame for cracks or breaks.
I have one that looks similar and the frame has stress cracks at several weld points.

On that note: anyone know if the 81' 250 frame is the same as the 465?

beware of the front downtube. Check it very closely for horizontal cracks in the area level to the DG badge on the pipe. I had a crack develop there and had it welded up before it got outta hand.
If there's nothing wrong, keep an eye on the downtube from time to time.

Nice find of a great bike. 250 frames are the same and looks like a better starting point than the one I picked up! Lol

I'm working on upgrades to the rear shock like real valve piston and a Fox remote reservior with compression adjuster. Should be a lot of fun when done!

Thanks for the info on the 250 frame. Did you say Fox shock? I need to get a frame for this one.

I have an 81 YZ250 frame, I will sell. Do you have any other after market YZ goodies you would sell? Anything for 1980 YZ125?

Race Tech did my 1981 YZ250 shock. Different valving, dual rate Eibach springs. Awesome workmanship and works beautifully.

A later model YZ two stroke throttle will work perfectly and I think you get a little more reliability from it. I've run the old whirlpool style throttle and prefer the modern version. The original throttle housing from that year will set you back $150 at least when they come up on Ebay. I am also running a late model clutch perch and lever with the quick adjust. Use OEM cables for clutch and brake if you can find them. There is a difference between OE and aftermarket. find the specs to file the slide from stock 2.5 to 3.0. I lost all that info when my old laptop shit the bed. I think Eric Gorr can cut the head to run pump gas or you could run 100LL Avgas at 32:1 with any decent oil. I use Maxima SuperM. For the swingarm bearings and bushings, OEM is best but $$$$. Triple clamps from a 84 or 85 will put the bars over the fork tubes for a more modern feel. You jsut need to use your 81 steering stem.Uni still has air filters available and the chain rollers are still a dealer item as are the swingarm blocks. The rollers are the same as whats on the Banshee. I found some pegs from a late model YZ/YZF that with a little grinding and drilling the peg mounts work just fine. Mine were ti so I have that trick factor going. There is on Ebay some where a milled bit for the clutch arm that will help soften the clutch pull. Look for a shift drum on Ebay as they are kind of fragile. I split and replace now in 20 minutes once I get the bottom end out of the frame. You can still get a V-force reed block for it. Add that with a PFR pipe and silencer and it will be really crisp. I run a hardened bolt in place of the shock/swingarm clevis pin. The stock one can bend. Do lots of digging on Ebay for small parts. Wiseco pistons are fine, just make sure you have a good machinist to set it up for you.

The 125G is actually my achilles heal. I have too much, nah that's not possible. I do have an nos cone pipe I'll sell you.

Looks like you need donor frame. I have parts from a 1981 YZ250. I think some parts swap over.

I could use the rear fender hoop if anyone has a junk frame but the seat mounts all the way back are good. Smile

Lol ,of all the bikes you chose to get with an artificial hip you picked a yz465. The only thing worse would have been a 84 CR500

Seriously dude; get some parts trays, or steal a couple of the wife's roasting trays. You are going to ,lose nuts & washers & bits.
Or you will drop down onto your kness & kneel on one of those little SOBs
