I picked up this 1990 KX250 off Craigslist for $700 when I was visiting California with the family over the holidays. It is currently awaiting shipping to NZ, should arrive the first couple of weeks in Feb.
I was inspired by the "Project 90" build Mathes did recently and I'd like to achieve something similar.
This is not going to be a factory replica or tribute bike and I'm not concerned about everything having to be period correct, it will be used for VMX and club days so it needs to be a fully functional race bike.
The motor runs and sounds quite good but it will get a full rebuild as part of the project and I'll be replacing the carb with a new PWK airstriker.
The forks are in good shape and don't leak but will obviously get a full service and set up for my weight (as will the shock)
It has a Pro Circuit works pipe that looks like it's been on there since 1990, it's pretty banged up but with no new ones available I think I will be forced to try to recondition it.
The shock and forks have pro circuit decals on them, I have no idea whether they were ever worked on at pro circuit or if the decals were just stuck on there by someone in the past.....who knows really. It also has a strange looking one piece bar clamp setup that I haven't seen before, perhaps some one on here may be able to identify what it is.
I'm hoping Kidkawie can be of help with information and knowledge, I've never owned a Kawasaki before so I'm not familiar with these bikes. I understand from reading some of these build threads that the older KX stuff is hard to get now, so any help sourcing parts would be appreciated. In particular I will need a replacement fuel tank and fork guards.

The Shop
Am I correct in assuming they simply fit straight on with no modifications?
Cheers
I have sent you a pm let's try and hook up soon
Cheers

So this will be my VMX bike.
Speak soon
It was a blast on fast tracks, very good on jump but a bit stiff to turn tight.
BTW cool bike and seems like you are doing really a great job so far!
My mounts were pretty worn , so I ended up building up the mounts with weld until before dressing back with a file so I didn't have sagging pegs.
Pit Row
Today it finally got to see the light of day and I'm pleased to say it's all but finished, just a couple of small finishing touches to do.
This thing was hands down the biggest pile of sh*t I've ever worked on, everything, and I mean everything was either broken, missing, or worn out. I had so many set backs that I almost gave up on it a couple of times.
I have replaced virtually everything!
I got it running and put it through it's first heat cycle riding up and down the road, it ran well.
I'm looking forward to getting it run in, set up and ready for the VMX series starting in September.
Now at the risk of making my self sound real stupid, will an ‘89 exhaust fit a ‘90?? I’m finding people selling the pipe for the 1989 bike but not the 1990.
Any ideas?? It’s much appreciated 👍
This is a slight change in subject but if anyone gets wind of some engine casings for a 90 or 91 that are for sale or going spare please do let me know!!
I have PC works pipe envy lol
