Any Yamaha experts know about the neutral detent bolt/spring/ball that threads into the upper case right above the shift drum?
Are these pieces supposed to be installed loose? The bolt that I removed from my bike has the spring and ball stuck in it, as if somebody "staked" the edge of the bolt-end to retain the spring and ball so it can be installed as one piece.
I've seen the exploded view on microfiche and have seen one on ebay.
Any ideas on what should be correct way to install this?

I don't know too much about that bike and it has been a whole lot of years since I rebuilt a 74 YZ125 which was probably similar. Sounds like the part he is describing is not meant to be taken apart. rather installed as an assembly.

Race On . . .
My '79 YZ250 has a spring loaded "bullet" shaped neutral locator and it is retained inside the oil drain bolt. It has plenty of travel within the bolt to move at least 3/8", where as the yz100 has the spring loaded ball which can't be retained outside of the bolt.
Because of this design, I think the neutral locater ball, spring and bolt is installed as one assembly.
Whaddaya think?
How well does it run?
Won 100cc class last weekend at our EVO event.
