I just saw this on FaceBoob and thought I would post it here as an FYI. I don't have any more info but you can always Google.

That is one track I wish I could have ridden on...
I remember watching The American Sports Cavalcade when they had the races from Carlsbad on there.. Was such a iconic place!!!!

I never rode on the Carlsbad track but I did attend a race there in the fall of 1977. They had the "4-Stroke Nationals" at Carlsbad that year. We walked around the complete track when we got there. My impression was that it looked like a rock hard and hard packed SOB. Not what I was use to by any means.

I raced Carslbad 100's of time's & it's was almost always as hard as a rock!

It's hard brick like clay & it's baked in the hot Southern Calif sun!

It was nice in practice, but when your the last Moto ( 500 Jr's) it was rock hard & blue grove with dust on top slick!

When you crash it's hitting like cement !

I can only remember a few time where it rained & it was like riding on a thick greased cement pad, It Sucked!

Ya, that track would get covered with concrete hard square edged holes and breaking bumps...was super hard on wheels.
Used to get so many flat spots in the rims by mid season I wanted to toss them.

Didn't happen to take any pics of that event did you? My dads bike was raced there that day, got a few photos and mentions in Pop Cycle and MXA. The photographer from Cycle News that covered the event lost all the photos years ago, but occasionally ill see spectator shots from that event.

No, sorry. That was before I got into moto-photography. I sure wish I had gotten my Canon AE1 a few years earlier and had gotten some pictures at that event. I remember Marty Moates on the Knobby Shop thumper and his amazing speed around Carlsbad that day. Dick Mann was racing there that day also.

Yep, Moates had it until BOTH KSI bikes broke. Ron Kentner from Oregon won...

I raced Carlsbad off and on for 25 years. I still live about 5 miles from where it used to be. I have gone to that reunion the last couple years. It is really cool.

Back in those times mechanics had to know how to set a bike up for a track like that. Tires, suspension, jetting, maybe a flywheel to try and find a little extra grip. Same thing with Saddleback. I only raced there 6-7 times, a lot more at Sadddleback. It was like sand on concrete.

The older I get, the faster I was.

Even being in his 60s, Rocket Rex looks like he could rip a phone book in half, and beat you to death with it. Then go race two 45s...

SDMX,

As a Ex CMC racer, I raced Carlsbad way to many times than I can count.

But for the life of me I can't figure out who is holding on to the Hodaka? He looks very familiar.

I got everyone else at first glance.

Reese,

That's what I was thinking, but wanted to make sure I was guessing right.

Getting old SUX, memory is fading & so is my eyesight!

No I probably won't make it. Posted the info because I knew some here would be interested and might not have known about this event. The Redwood Cheater Champ Mckeag might make it. He's in the area.

They were all great -- very down to earth and willing to chat. Spoke with Hansen for some time, great guy. I didn't even know about his head injury while prepping for MXDN. ...wondered what happened to him after is SX championship. The only one who was not quite as accommodating was Brad Lackey (wasn't there this year, but was there in prior years). He was nice and all, but was the only one who seemed like he was doing you a favor talking with you or taking a picture.

It was also great chatting with the old local pros and fellow novices. Many of these guys live elsewhere and flew into town for the reunion. I saw an old buddy of mine I used to race with 20+ years ago, but haven't seen him since. We are going to Pala this Friday to go slow at the same time once again.

Thanks to Scott Burnworth for putting this whole thing on!

My experiences with Brad Lackey are nothing but positive. He was in Boise two years ago for the RacerX Vintage Inter-Am race. He was totally open to talking to people Saturday at the races. Saturday night at the event soirée I worked with him and a friend handing out the event bibs. Again super friendly. What was his charitable project that night? Selling the shirts to raise money for Preston Petty.
