I found one for sale on craigslist and it sure looked to me like disc brake on the back but a torque arm like with a drum going to it which doesn't make any sense to me. can anyone tell me what is going on there or am I just crazy?

They had an arm which held the caliper instead of the bracket welded to the swingarm.

The one in Winneconne advertised as an 87 with no spark ? Ive txted and emailed about that bike and got no response.

Full floating rear disc. TUF sold a kit to convert the rear disc KX's,it decreased wheel hop.

ive got my 84 yz 490 that I could use but my two new kids are taking away any chances lol. but my next to last race was at mt carol in 2012 and I got my first win at the Midwest vmx round so I tell myself at least I went out on top lol.

Thats what I was looking at it for. The guy said it has 140 psi compression, missing the kickstarter , the rear shock needs work and it doesn't have spark. The ad is still up .... not sure what I'd pay for it with those issues though.

That's an '86, looks pretty clean. Should be able to get it for $400ish.

Could be anything from a bad kill button to a $400 ignition tho. Not sure if they used motoplat or crappy SEM that year

That would be a cool bike to restore . You most likely will be the only one at a VMX with one. You'd be that guy with the clean 86 KTM.
It looks like a dummy owned it with the silly burgundy paint on the frame and blue engine. But not someone that beat the crap out of it. Pipe still looks good, The pegs and shifter don't droop, The tank hasn't yellowed and the seat cover looks holeless, (Man! Those seats were hard!)
I hope a real mx guy like you gets it not some punk that's going to paint it flat black with no fenders and sell it as mint on Craig's for 1200 3months later
