1999 KTM 380 Kick Start Assembly

Hi, I’m having an issue installing the kick start assembly. I get to the point of installing the kick start spring and attempt to attach it to the spring hanger and this is where I get frustrated. The shaft keeps spinning and when I think it’s right the mechanism engages when the kickstart lever is already half way down? I understand my attempt at explaining this was probably butchered but any help would suffice thanks!!
