I know there were a few topics in the main forum on the 2017 crf450r but I couldn't find which one. I have about 45 hours on mine and was changing the oil today and found some metal shavings when changing the oil filter. Has anyone else noticed this on theirs or heard of this being a problem. I have not had a chance to tear it apart yet but plan on having that done real soon.

Just heard from a friend that owns a shop that 17’s and 18’s have started grenading. He’s had quite a few with really with low hours already. Someone raced Day in the Dirt this year and had one grenade on the face of a table top and got pretty messed up from what I was told and is starting a law suite against Honda.

Color of the shavings?? its not uncommon for a motor that shares both oil sides to have shavings in it..Clutch pack particles is a majority of it

Are the shaving similiar looking to nickel seal off the cyclinder? We had nickel seal fall off after less than 1 hr of run time on a 17 and also many clutch fibers break

Piston rings were installed correctly it’s the first time I have ever seen anything like that happen especially right off the bat with a new bike! These pictures are all out of the same bike with less than one weekend of riding on it, our second bike had problems within the first few hours also head gasket problem from the factory they didn’t tighten the head bolts.

I have not had a chance to take it apart yet but the shavings I got were all silver and were mostly small pieces but there was one or two that were decent sized I would say. I am going to try and get to it tomorrow and see what I can find.

I have always ridden Yamaha and would go 2 years without having to touch anything on the motor so it kind of sucks going to Honda and having this happen under 50 hours. lol

Mxgrpahics, id pull the clutch cover and inspect that before you get to deep into it. But if you are ready for a piston and rings then obviously get into it and inspect

I did take apart the clutch today and that was all good in there so I guess we will just take it apart some more and see what the rest looks like in the motor.

Check the back of the basket and the bolt inside the shaft that the kickstarter reducer gear rides on. Mine came loose and ate up the gear on the back of the basket and eventually broke the case.

Mx Graphics, did you ever figure this out? Just found two tiny silver shavings in the oil filter on my 17 and same deal; looked at the clutch and it is fine. I haven't had any issues at all with this bike and have only ever owned Honda four strokes, so this is my first bike that shares gear and motor oil. My 2015 has over 100hrs and I've never seen this.

This motor has alot of compression stock, 13.5:1 idk if that is causing the top ends to wear so fast. But i just did my top end with oem parts at 45 hrs an the piston skirts were roached. Got all the parts for $300

Yikes. What is your riding ability? Was this causing shavings in the oil filter? I’m at 43 hours :-0

Intermediate rider, the oil always looked good to me. I did a comp test and got 55/65 psi so i took the head off to check it out. My cylinder was showing a little wear, but im gunna runnnn it.
Shout out to Hansen !
Got to ride with him the other day.

Lmao CoorsLightKuhry! Yeah this last oil change I did was after four motos at GH (National track, stadium cross and REM) and it looked great. My clutch was abused pretty good in all motos so I guess that explains the two tiny shavings. (I hope) lol. I wish you luck with yours hopefully no issues.

Hey guys, so little update I did a race this Saturday on fresh oil and fresh Honda OEM oil filter. It was not a very long event but nonetheless the bike was still ridden hard and clutch abused. I also did about a half hour of practice after the race to work on a few sections. Next day I drained the oil into a big wide open pan so I could run a magnet through. The oil came out clear, gold and beautiful as if it were literally brand new. Pulled oil filter and was still yellow and not a single shaving. The conclusion I came to here is that you cannot get away with as much on this motor as you could with the old Honda separate oil motors; and even if you did have clutch shavings you would not see them on the old bikes which is why this was foreign to me. It was stupid and irresponsible of me to do all that racing the previous weekends on one oil and filter. Also pulled the clutch out and no broken plates; come to think they were barely worn and were definitely in spec. Long story short always change your oil after race day no matter how good you think you rode!

I have a 2018 Honda CRF 450 R with 27 hours and found metal shavings in the oil filter . Took it to the Honda dealer they suggested doing a top end and I decided to replace the clutch with the Hinson
complete clutch kit. It is a little disappointing after spending so much money for a new bike and 27 hours in ,spending quite A bit more .
Is this normal? Do you think I jumped the gun by taking it to the dealer?

on all my previous hondas when shaving were in the oil filter it meant the rod bearing and rod were going to shit, PROBABLY TIME FOR A CARILLO!!!

How many rides/races were on that oil and filter when you changed it? Earlier last year I raced six motos on one oil filter and found a few shavings. Everyone I talked to said it was normal clutch pack wear. Now I change the oil and filter after every race and every 4-5 rides and no issues. I'm at 80 hours.

This is how my 17 looks after 40 hours. Putting a stock compression ratio CP in it with a new cylinder. I was getting blow by. I noticed a slight gas smell as soon as i pulled the valve cover off. Has anyone else had an issue with the spark plug hole filling with mud? glad I wasnt just changing a plug out cause a ton of dirt fell onto the piston.

@agcarlson I am following your build thread so I already saw this, but wow that's wild for only 40 hours. What oil do you run and what classes do you race? I changed my spark plug once just because at maybe 35 hours, but I haven't even seen the inside of my motor. Haven't even done valves or anything at 80 hours lol. You're already in it that deep maybe you should replace the spark plug boot.

I run pro Honda oil. I ride open A and 25+ and I like the Rev limiter ?

it sucks to hear people are having these issues
im a b rider back in Australia and i had 2 17 crf450 which nothing but perfect except the clutch life was weak which i found running 3 stiffer hinson springs eliminated that problem other wise put a top end in it at 55hrs andthe piston skirts had very little wear, ring gap was still very good and even valve clearances were still spot on
both ended up doing 100+ hrs with no issues

now ive had 2 2018
clutch was much more improved and still no engine issues

i will agree depending on rider change you're oil and keep on top of the the little things to avoid big issues
