Suspension, pipe, silencer, jetting, and getting comfortable with turning your right wrist a little farther than usual.

And fresh tires...

I prefer the red powerband over the others. But, as mentioned above, good suspension that is setup for you, may be the best mod.

Gytr Flywheel weight. Will tame down the hit and give you a little more traction.
Get the correct squish set, this mod is better than any pipe in my opinion and will add bottom.
After 10-20 hours figure out if you like the stock suspension. Some really like the stock stuff.
If not send to Enzo for a revalve.
Thats it, you really need nothing more.
Ride it!!!!

My opinion: suspension set to your weight (may or may not have to do this...it's good enough out of the box), jetting is pretty much spot on but go one size fatter on the main, race gas mixed 50/50, Moto Tasinari reed cage, FMF pipe/ silencer, flywheel weight (I never do this.....I like it the way it is but others love this), and be done. Fit the ergos to your body type (I always get a taller seat and change the bars).

If you have to ask this question, then the best answer anyone in here can give you consists of 3 parts...

1) suspension
2) tires
3) practice

Free-ish (assumes you have access to nice tools and know-how):

*Retard the timing 2 degrees - this makes the bike much more ridable and stops detonation. Check it first to be sure it's stock, ride it, then retard it 2 degrees and ride it again so you can see the difference. It's a huge difference in a good way.

*Correct squish clearance and combustion chamber volume as stated earlier. Stock it's way too big of a gap.

*Jetting. Make sure it's jetted correctly. Sounds obvious, but a lot of people ride poorly jetted bikes.

$$$:
*V-force reeds

*DEP pipe and silencer

*Suspension - springs and valving from a good tuner

I agree with the statement on the stock suspension. It might be the one bike that is not worth futzing with.

I have 5 rides on my 2018 yz250 and had my pervious yz for 3 years.

On my old bike i had a 9oz fww and dep pipe with dep standard length silencer. This had a smooth pull from the bottom through the mid and revved forever on top.

On my 18 I have a gytr by hgs pipe and shorty gytr silencer and no flywheel weight. With this combo the power picks up sooner off the bottom and pulls hard through the mid and goes a little flat in the top compared to the dep. I find myself going up a gear and using the extra mid to pull like a tractor compared to revving it out with the dep. For the tracks i ride the hgs system is my preferred system. I may get a standard length hgs silencer to get back a bit of over rev.

For suspension, i had my old bike done twice and didn't find it any better than stock. In 2015 the yz got updated fork settings which carried through to the 2018. The 2018 suspension is excellent. I'm 180 lbs without gear and it works great. If i was being picky i could use slightly plusher through braking bumps and a bit stiffer at the end for over jumps but all in all its pretty good

As other have stated, proper sag/spring rate, pipe & silencer, maybe rear sprocket change (+/- 1 either way), good tires at proper psi.

Matchning block&cylinder ports at bottom , twin air filter , gnarly ,14-49 sprockets .
