Ktm plastic shock collar /preload

I am destroying my plastic shock collar when I adjust preload. I have to adjust frequently as I will go from hard pack to sand tracks (104-110 sag)
I am using screwdriver/hammer, any tips on what to use instead or different technique?

Try and use your hand or a more blunt than object like a thin socket extension.

XTrig makes the adjuster that you use a 8mm T handle and just spin it.

Odd, I have an FC350 and it works just fine on mine. You get one notch at a time so it takes some patience, but works just fine.

I just use one hand to turn the spring then use the other hand to turn the preload ring. Spinning both together works fine and saves you wrecking the preload ring or buying any special tools

. I spray some silicone lubricate on the shock collar & threads. Put bike on a stand, grab shock spring by hand & spin with collar. If it is difficult to spin, I have taken a long punch & used it to pry/ push adjuster while spinning by hand... I set my KtM sag at around 105 and leave it, I make my chassis adjustments with the fork height in the triples...

3rd line for sand, 2nd for hardpack?
I’m at 110 3rd line for sand maybe I’ll leave sag at 110 and raise forks for hardpack.
I’m just amazed how big a difference I can feel with 5 mm sag makes a huge difference

I've got a traditional metal one with metal locking ring. It cost $65 from trackside support but dont know who made it. Maybe pro circuit or factory connection?

They are out there, but if your threads are clean and the bike is off the ground, you should be able to move by twisting thr spring as others have mentioned

Fast, whooped out track.. slide forks down in clamps for more stability... tight track, slide forks up a line or 2 for better turning.. I”m happy with my sag at 105mm everywhere..

Sounds that you have to invest in an Xtrig. Then a 8mm wrench or accu drill will do the trick.

It’s just an oem plastic one. I’d recommend getting the xtrig if you can find one at a decent price. They are really nice.

But if you just need one to get by right now, it’s yours

Just remember. On the 2016 and newer shocks. You have to take the shock apart to change the preload ring

Bought an X-Trig for a 2015 KTM 250sx because the nylon collar broke. I had to send the rear shock to Factory Connection so they could disassemble the shock to put the new X-Trig on.

The X-Trig is definitely worth the money though, its a solid unit and I just use a socket on an impact driver to set sag.
