So I'm doing a top end on a 05 rmz 450. The cam chain was notocibly loose so i tightened it no problem. Checked the valvce clearances and the right exhaust was .00 mm. The left was .38mm. The bike did skip timing. But the cam journal is trashed. And right exhaust side valve retainer snapped in half.
Im wondering do you think the cause is oil starvation?
Also if this cylinder wear looks normal. Thanks in advance

My vote is for waaaay to much time on the top end. As for the cam journal, im going to guess they didnt torque the cam caps in the right sequence or torque spec. Literally dealing with that same problem on a project kx250F. Have to replace the head & cams on mine. Also since the bike has such a worn top end, im going to assume the oil level was never checked and ran low. Also never changed either. Your cylinder needs replated.

Cylinder needs attention.
Oil starvation in the head due from dirty oil filter or filter screen or faulty oil pump. Head will have to be replaced.
A bike jumping time is not good and all items are signs of poor maintenance.

Yep, as mentioned those bikes have a oil filter screen as well as the replaceable oil filter I'm betting its plugged. My 2006 was jumping time like that as well, replacing the timing chain fixed that.

Do you think this filter is dirty enough to cause oil not going to the top end? The pumps seemed good. They both spun freely nothing out of the ordinary there. The screen I can't get to due to splitting the cases.

Bit hard to tell but there is definitely shavings on that filter by the look of things. The screen pulls out of the side of the cases by the shifter , no need to split cases, if that’s what you mean.

I have the ign cover off and have pulled the oil pump out there and checked it out. As far as I can tell in the picture the filter screen is in between the cases.

From what I remember it should pull out from shifter side. Might be confusing with my 2008 but pretty sure they were both the same

I have an ‘07, and the screen pulls out under the shift lever, 12 mil on the hex, I believe. Two different size drains on that motor, right beside each other, pretty sure 05-07 are the same engine.
