Off idle throttle sensitivity: 2018 Honda CRF450

Picked up a fresh Honda CRF 450 a few weeks ago. Have been enjoying it so far, with one issue that is still bugging me: when rolling the throttle on the engine feels very abrupt/jerky. Feels like a badly jetted 2-stroke that is surging.

This is mainly a problem in flat turns and rutted corners; places where a smooth throttle hand is important.

I have turned the idle up quite a bit and that helped some. Primarily have adapted by giving bigger throttle openings and feathering clutch more.

Have read that remapping (send off or DIY) will help. Have also read that some exhausts will help. Any others have this problem and potential solutions?

Do you mean the power comes on hard/abrupt? Or that it surges back and forth as the power comes on?

Heard the 17 models had that issue & Honda reconfigured the standard map #1 on the 18's. Purchased an 18 in mid Dec. 2017 & haven't had any issues with low throttle openings. The engine performs flawlessly off idle & actually prefer the aggressive map #3 option. The bike is still bone stock at the moment & don't feel it needs an aftermarket exhaust IMHO.

What I meant is that the power comes on abrupt, not that it surges on/off. Once on the gas it's just fine, it's just when you crack the throttle open from closed is when I notice the issue.

Also to note, it is less apparent in mode 2 (mellow) and mode 3 (aggressive) than it is in mode 1 (stock).

You can always tailor a map to your liking at the initial throttle opening if you feel the standard map # 1 has an abrupt opening. From my understanding you can reconfigure map # 2 & 3, but not map # 1.
When I purchased an 09 model I do remember having that issue (abrupt throttle opening) & had it remapped which helped out due to the revised map. Your call.

I know what you are talking about. I only notice it idling around in first. Once under motion I don't notice. Think some of it for me at least, is how easy the throttle pull is. I would actually like to figure out how to make it a bit stiffer without just letting cables/barrel get dirty. Do think I'm going to try a remap.

Noticed this very thing on mine as well. Sketchy . Didnt like it at all. Bike is gone now tho . Remap should take care of it.
