MX Sports Introduces Seven Round 125cc All Star Series to AMA Pro Motocross for 2018 12

Vital MX: It's finally official! The 125 series at the nationals has gained a new name and grown to seven rounds for 2018. Just as last year, it's a one-moto format and will go on right before the first 250/450 motos of the day. Read below for more info and to find out if you're eligible to sign up and let her sing!

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (April 17, 2018) - The beloved sound of 2-stroke motorcycles will return to American motocross this summer as MX Sports Pro Racing has announced the introduction of the 125 All Star Series. This new support program will be featured at a total of seven rounds of the 2018 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, beginning with the season opening Hangtown Motocross Classic on May 19th.

The 125 All Star Series will consist of six qualifying rounds and a climactic finale at the season-ending Ironman National on August 25th. In addition to bookending the National schedule, this one-of-a-kind 2-stroke showcase will also visit Thunder Valley (June 2), High Point (June 16), The Wick 338 (June 30), Washougal (July 28), and Budds Creek (August 18). Each All Star event will feature a one-moto format, and will be contested during opening ceremonies at the designated Nationals.

The Dirt Diggers will help open the 125 All Star Series at the 50th Annual Red Bull Hangtown Motocross Classic, the 2018 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross season opener on May 19th.

"The resurgence of market interest for 2-stroke based motorcycles, and our recent experience with 2-stroke support classes at national events presents us with opportunities for developing a more formal program for these products for 2018 and beyond," explained Roy Janson, Director of Competition for MX Sports Pro Racing. 

"The 125cc 2-stroke machine in particular is experiencing an increased level of interest and popularity, due in part to the role it plays in our sport for amateur riders," Janson continued. "These motorcycles provide an appropriate transitional machine with size and performance characteristics consistent with the size and skill sets of many young athletes. Additionally, there is continued interest in these machines with our fans based on the important historical role these 2-strokes played in the development, growth and evolution of our sport."

The 125 All Star Series is open to current production-based 125cc 2-stroke machines, as well as non-current production models from the final three years of production for manufacturers who no longer produce 125cc models. To be eligible to compete riders must be a minimum 16 years of age, with an AMA skill classification of "B" or higher. Current and former AMA Pro Motocross-licensed riders are eligible to compete, so long as they are not participating in the professional classes at that event.

To apply for race entry, submit the 125 All Star Series Entry Form directly to the appropriate event promoter noted on the Form.

The beloved sound and smell of 2-stroke motorcycles return to Washougal as one of the seven Nationals hosting a 125 All Star Series race.

No 2 stroke race at the 2 stroke Mecca? Things are always exactly as they appear.

I’m willing to bet that every fan, rider and student of the sport of Motocross asked to themselves.. Where’s Glenn Helen? Politics again?

And what’s with the name “all star series”. Meaning what? Baseball? Are there going to be a select number of past pros and “all stars” picked by the MX Polit bureau? It’s a 125cc 2 stroke series. How about the 125 2 stroke class? They don’t have to sell it with a cheesy name. We all want the 2 strokes to return. 250 2 strokes legal in the 250 class please.

Glen Helen has their own two-stroke race as an intermission, it was up to each promoter this year to pick what they wanted and seven opted for this 125 series. Glen Helen wanted to run an open-class two stroke exhibition race instead.

Secondly, it's something that's going to build...it's meant to be for Amateur B/A level riders and ex-pros to show off the bikes and build some exposure for them again. It's better than nothing and the plan is to build it up year over year, so don't complain too much...

Are 150’s or 144’s aloud or is it 125 only? It doesn’t matter to me. I just need to know what kind of bike to go buy tomorrow.

The rules I saw are stating 125cc maximum size, but I could be wrong. I ran a 125 last year at one as I was told that was the rule.

Same program as last year, with live TV doing them prior to the first motos is all the time they have with the current schedule, plus giving them a practice in the morning. It's a start, if it catches on and keeps growing it'll eventually get more time.

The 2 stroke is very over due as the primary machine in sx and mx...125 and 250. The reasons are extremely obvious by now.

That’s awesome to hear! I absolutely love my 4 stroke bikes, and I get so psyched up hearing 40 450s leaving the gates, but I also get a nostalgic buzz when I hear 2 strokes. Hopefully it will only continue to grow. 250 2 strokes being allowed in the 250 class at the pro level is what so many of us want to see also but it’s pretty wishful thinking.
