Navy Moto X World Championships: Sunday

Sunday’s action at the Navy Moto X World Championships included the Step Up Final (Part 2), which included the qualifiers from Saturday (Ricky Carmichael and Jeremy Stenberg), and some past champs, in the form of Tommy Clowers, Ronnie Renner, and Matt Buyten. RC looked like the man to beat, clearing the bar at 35’, but bouncing his chin off the bars, and going down on the landing. By the rules, it was declared an incomplete run, and unfortunately, he was unable to continue.

Matt Buyten and Ronnie Renner both failed to make it at 35’, so the gate at the base of the jump was moved back to give them a longer run at the hit, and it also became a sudden-death competition. Buyten won the coin toss, and cleared the bar on the first try. Unfortunately for Renner, that left him in second spot…without even a chance to attempt it again.

In the Moto X Racing final, it was Yamaha Factory Racing’s Broc Hepler who took the gold, leading the way after Troy Lee Designs Red Bull Honda’s Gavin Gracyk (who had holeshot the main event), tangled with Jason Lawrence in the third turn, with both of them going down. Hepler was the big benefactor and he took over the lead, which he held to the end. MDK KTM’s Nick Wey and Justin Brayton took the second and third spots.

In the freestyle final, the top four qualifiers were paired up, with Nate Adams and Jeremy Stenberg advancing to the final round, and Jeremy Lusk and Mat Rebeaud duking it out for third. Nate topped the field with a barrage of flip variations, and grabbed his second gold of the weekend, after taking Saturday’s Speed and Style Final as well.
