Tracks were more technical but also slower.

I miss 2 strokes.

These 450’s just have way to much power.

The bikes have evolved. They are fast real fast. Everything in life evolves. Maybe a restriction like NASCAR?

Everyone goes fast. Everyone.

In 2003 there were 3 factory racers left after Daytona because of injuries. Carmichael/Reed/Fonseca.

Could be the attitude of the rider today as well? Example * Cole knew that quad was dangerous but he’s racing for a win/championship and took that risk, but I do agree with a lot faster tracks. Jumps were peakier to back in the day if that’s a word.

No there wasn't. Not even close. Remember races where the 125's couldn't even do the triples?

+40% time in the air?? The tracks evolved to accommodate the motorcycle. It's a showcase for the manufacturers.

Nope. Less power. More skill required. Remember San Diego in 05 when Reed and Carmichael, 1st and 2nd, lapped up to 3rd place? That’s insane and would never happen now. Not enough to spread out the talent with these machines. Riders push faster to compensate. Men are out there in contention that shouldn’t be so they’ll push harder than normal. The bike is more powerful but that human body is the same as it ever was. Pretty easy to see what will happen there.

Injuries have unfortunately always been a common place in this sport regardless of engine type.

Not even close. No where near the current racing, You had one or maybe two out and its the reason why you always hear about how anybody could win on any given night.........cause 90 percent of the riders where on the line

NOT EVEN CLOSE

I miss twostrokes. We are stupid if we don’t change something, and our sport will be even smaller as a result. Put a slower engine in them for gods sake

Something to consider, in the 2 stroke days, it was 125's and 250's. No 500's, they were just too big and powerful for SX tracks.

The 450's now are putting out the same HP as the 500's if not more.

I am glad this thread was made, I was thinking the same thing for the past few weeks, trying to recall from 80's and 90' if I ever saw so many injuries during a SX season as we have been seeing the past 9 years or so every season.

Ever considered this to just be a a "weird" season? would bracia's incident be any different than if he were riding a 2 smoke? Seriously this is the pinnacle of dirt bike racing and tech will always advance. Im fine with the 450 class if you wanna put a HP cap or make everybody run the same ecu, or even limit the amount of engines teams can use in the season im down for that, but bring back the 2 strokes because its safer? Screw that in my opinion. This is a dangerous sport, shit happens, guys take risk and sometimes they get hurt, its part of racing

Not necessarily a 2 stroke 4 stroke issue but horsepower maybe . Are there as many injuries happening in the 250 class ? Serious question because I haven't researched it but it doesn't seem like it . Does Roczen's whiskey throttle incident happen on a 250f ?

250f's should be premier class indoors. Racing would be so much better with all the top riders on the "small" bikes

Not on pro level.
There were plenty, but bikes have so much more torque, and jumps are so much bigger.
2/25/2018 6:56am
Guys now a days are also a lot faster. No one back then was going Tomacs speed. Faster bikes + faster riders = more injuries

And stew went 24-0 in 08. And it’ll never happen again because we have so many fast guys. Even if they were all on 2 strokes no ones lapping to third anymore.

It might but then how would you expect a privateer to compete with factory 250 engines? you wanna talk about killing the sport, the amount of money to do rebuilds and just to build a multiple competitive motors would be insane.

I remember one year in Houston where Kawasaki didn't have the awning set up outside of the 18 wheeler. I thought it was bad then. Yet here we are in the days of 450's with 35-40 ft lbs of torque and Vitards are creaming their jeans waiting for the E-bikes to take over with 120 ft lbs of torque. Bring on the body bags, it's advancing the sport. No room for pussies!

The Supercross tracks are 10 times more dangerous than the outdoor tracks , too many jumps.

Yeah then we would lose 3 Manufacturers and tons of rides and sponsors, yeah great idea. I doubt kawi, honda and suzuki would be down to stop all R&D they have on 450's so they can make 250 2 strokes

The answer is NO and the grenade type injuries were far less. Shits getting out of hand! 450’s are too much for SX period! Doubt that quad quad section would have been attempted on a two stroke. Whichever, its just too much bike. Yoo heavy and too fast

No. And I’d argue the injuries that did occur weren’t as serious as often.
